What we do! Today… the library is a space unique in Puerto Rico for the breadth and depth of services provided in our meeting rooms, play areas and computer labs. Because 44% of the island’s children live below the poverty level, we focus on supporting their learning and supplementing public school education… along with providing access to computers and job skill training for all ages through courses ranging from basic use to an advanced IT curriculum.
Library services and programs that increase opportunities for children, teens and adults are attracting more visits this year. In the first half of 2019-2020, visits across the system are 19,332. We serve as a computer center lab with 40 computers connected to Wi Fi and to all major search engines.
Successful programs in the main library this semester have changed the lives of: 22 students exploring the joy of playing an instrument in Beginners Music. 15 students improving their music skills as members of our Advanced Band. 31 students building their skills in our Math Tutorials. 28 children building and creating in Lego Club. 7 teens launching our Lego STEM sessions. 15 budding female scientists in Girls Who Code. 25 students gaining fluency in English. 60 students preparing for Puerto Rico college admissions exams. 14 adults completing our CompTIA Network
Also we: Help teens with homework in our 2 computer labs; Offering a minimum of 12 academic courses in our 6 satellites in public elementary schools for children, teens and adults in these marginalized communities; Preparing juniors and seniors to take the Puerto Rico College Board exams; Hosting 100 children in summer workshops. Host Homeschool groups, Head Start Activities and the Department of Mental Health (ASMSCA) programs.
